The lesbian community in Denver is flourishing

with events, happy hours and social gatherings.

One woman who brings the community together

on a regular basis is Silke Reuthlinger, founder of

Hip Chicks Out, the social networking group.

Reuthlinger and her flock of chicks has been a

staple for Colorado lesbians since the group

began in 2005.

Hip Chicks Out is a social networking group

open to all lesbians and their allies, regardless of

age, demographic or style. It’s all inclusive and has

every type of woman in attendance from moms,

singles and couples to people who just want to

come out for a Friday happy hour with the ladies.

Offering the lesbian community a way to get

involved while still mingling in the straight bar

scene, Reuthlinger and the Hip Chicks Out are

known for their Second Friday happy hours at the

hot-spot wine bar The Living Room, 1055

Broadway.

Reuthlinger has done an impeccable job of rallying

the lesbian community and bringing the ladies

in for happy hours and HCO’s infamous crashers.

“The new crashers are secretive,” Reuthlinger

said. “We don’t tell anybody until the day of. We are

really trying to make it a surprise for the venue.”

The crashers take over a different Lodo straight bar

for the night and then Reuthlinger sits back and

waits for the gals to show up.

Reuthlinger started Hip Chicks Out because

she wanted to create a new place for lesbians to

meet and mingle over happy hour. “I wanted to go

to the cool Lodo bars, not just with one friend, but

with a group,” Reuthlinger said. “When you go to

the straight bars in Lodo you often get hit on and it

can be miserable. I wanted to get a big group of

people to meet up and take over the bar and make

it a lesbian spot for the night.”

Reuthlinger’s passion has always been to

make room for lesbians within the straight community

to show Denver that lesbians are just like

everybody else.

“People always told me we should go to gay

places, but I really wanted to expose the lesbians

to the straight community. We like to get

dressed up and go to nice martini bars, too,”

Reuthlinger said.

In addition to the Second Friday happy hours at

the Living Room and the surprise crashers, Hip

Chicks Out is teaming up with First Friday queen

Dede Frain of Babes Around Denver in preparation

for the SWISH Event weekend March 30-April 3,

which features events and parties in celebration of

the Women’s Final Four. And just around the corner

is the biggest women’s New Years Eve event in

Denver as Frain and Reuthlinger present BANG on Dec. 31 at Eden, 3090 Downing St. Advanced general

admission for the party is $10, $15 at the door

and VIP tables are available. ●
